Areas Of Expertise
Over the years I have treated individuals complaining of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and relationship problems. I have provided psychotherapy to persons coping with change of life and career concerns. During the years that HIV/AIDS devastated the lives of men and their families and friends I worked with serious illness and end-of-life issues. Working with LGBT clients from the years when there were no laws protecting them from loss of housing or jobs, I learned how damaging to mental health sexual stigma can be. Today many of my clients and patients continue to strive to balance successful relationships and careers against the effects of minority stress. Working with couples, whether dating, cohabiting, or married I have learned the challenges of establishing and maintaining long-term loving relationships, no matter how the couple understands and defines their relationship.
There are two or three primary factors that I know from research and experience help to increase the success of psychotherapy. The first is establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship. That is best achieved by establishing an environment in which you feel safe and trusting, one in which you feel understood as you want to be. The second factor is identifying problems you want addressed and establishing gains you wish to reach. Part of that is exploring how you will know when you have completed therapy or decided to take a hiatus. From the first session I pay very close attention to the goals you set for therapy. From session to session I will ask how we are doing to be certain that out work together is helping you reach your goals.
Length of Therapy
The length of psychotherapy is determined by many factors, including, the nature, complexity, and severity of the problems presented. Regardless of the length or brevity of therapy, I try to put myself out of business as fast as possible by making you your own therapist. That is, much of what transpires in psychotherapy is aimed at teaching you how to resolve problems and manage difficulties more effectively and efficiently.
